Over the years, I have worked on so many different homes, each with its own style, story and personality. But no matter how different the homes were, I kept hearing the same thing from clients.
“The room is almost there, but it just doesn’t feel finished.”
They had the sofa. The rug was down. The coffee table had been chosen. Sometimes they had even invested in beautiful artwork and lighting. All the major pieces were in place, but somehow the room still felt a little flat, disconnected or incomplete.
And more often than not, it came down to the final layer.
The cushions, throws and smaller styling pieces are often treated as an afterthought, but they can completely change the way a room feels. They add softness, warmth, colour and personality. They help connect the larger pieces and make the whole space feel more intentional.
The problem was that my clients often didn’t know where to start.
They would find one cushion they liked, then struggle to work out what to pair with it. They weren’t sure how many patterns to use, which colours should repeat through the room or how to create something layered without it feeling busy. And honestly, I understood why. There are endless options out there, but not always a clear or simple way to bring them together.
Even as a designer, I often found myself searching across multiple suppliers to create the right combination. One cushion might have the perfect colour, another the right scale of pattern and another the texture the room needed. Pulling it all together took time, and it was rarely as straightforward as it should have been.
That was one of the ideas behind Hay & Co Studio.
I wanted to create collections where the hard work had already been done. Where the colours, patterns and textures were designed to sit beautifully alongside one another, so you could confidently mix and match without wondering whether it would all work.
The aim was never to create a room that felt overly styled or too perfect. I wanted to make it easier to create spaces that feel warm, considered and lived in — the kind of room that looks beautiful but still invites you to put your feet up.
Hay & Co Studio grew from years of seeing how much difference those final pieces can make. It is about taking the guesswork out of finishing a room and helping people create homes that feel complete, personal and entirely their own.
